ISSUE:
I’ve heard people talking about SFI , what is it?
FACTS:
The purpose of the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) is to promote sustainable forestry practices to produce healthy, productive forests for the future.
The SFI is a national program created by the American Forest and Paper Association (AF&PA) in 1995.
An independent Sustainable Forestry Board (SFB) provides oversight and direction to the SFI. The SFB has five members from each of the following sectors: environmental/ conservation; the broader forestry community, such as academia and governmental agencies; and member companies.
The SFI principles, among other things, encourage landowner education, logger training, and public awareness of sustainable forestry principles.
The SFI program is coordinated at the state level by the West Virginia Forestry Association and implemented through state-specific activities and programs.
